"Teaching women how to fight - or fight back - is his raison d'etre."
"Nelson Nio's muscled arm cut through the air and slammed against
the dummy. Awed Tologs jumped back and a murmured "whoa"
rippled through the audience before the girls burst into loud applause."
"Camp Rosie, funded by grants and community support, teaches
empowerment. Camp Rosie convened at the Pacific Edison Center
where 25 girls sat on a gym floor facing Nelson Nio, who was there
to teach self defense."
"After a dose of financial planning was finished, the girls practiced some
self-defense moves with the help of Nelson  Nio, the creator of a women's
self-defense system called SHIELD. Nio coaches the youngsters how to use
their arms to block an attacker's blows, and how to lower their center of
gravity to keep their balance if they are being pushed around."
"Self-defense instructor Nelson Nio got ahold of Sabine Zolan's
shoulders, but she grabbed onto him, pulled herself closer to him
and kneed him several times in the groin. The quick-action move
was one of nearly a dozen that Nio taught a group of Glendale
women during Thursday's SHIELD self defense class inside the
Glendale Police Department's Community Room."
"Organized by the Glendale YWCA, the Glendale Commission
on the Status of Women, Assemblyman Paul Krekorian, State
Senator Jack Scott and the Glendale chapter of the Armenian
National Committee, the self-defense class tonight will be taught
by Nelson Nio, the founder of SHIELD Self Defense."
"Several Survivors of sexual assault were present at the class
and encouraged to attend. You could tell that during class,
especially if they were training with Nelson and possibly pinned
down, that it was an emotional experience for them. But it was a
healing experience as well."
