Preparation for SHIELD Self
Defense Training program
Congratulations on enrolling yourselves in this 28 days training
program. The class starts promptly. Please arrive about 15-20
minutes before hand.
What to wear
Wear something comfortable, but avoid baggy clothing. Yoga
attire is recommended. It would help if your knees, elbows and
shoulders are exposed to ensure correct body structure.
What to expect in class
Throughout this course, you will meditate in class, stretch, work
on ground techniques, practice falling down, and safely learn to
disable attacks from front, left, right, above, behind, and under.
Some exercises are very active, some are medium active, and
some, you will be sitting down learning things by watching the
instructor or other students perform.
Layering
Our teaching method is a process of layering.
1. You will first learn the concept.
2. Next, learn the skills that relate to the concept.
3. Then, you will practice the mechanics of the skills.
4. Finally, you apply all that you have learned.
This layering process is essential, because it facilitates the ability
to absorb, integrate, and digest new information. In other
words: "Learn it, drill it, do it."
At each class session, new material is layered onto the skills
taught the session before. As your skills and confidence
increase, the training will become more complex and challenging.
As your skills and power grows, so does your self-confidence.
When you are fighting in the adrenaline state, your body does
not know the difference between real life and simulation. As far
as your subconscious mind believes, this is really happening to
you and you are really successfully saving your life. This is why it
is so important to begin gradually at a pace where you can
integrate the basics before being challenged.
The CONTEXT of this training
This is YOUR training, not mine. We facilitate, give instructions
and teach you the skills. How much you learn is up to you. Our
recommendation is for you to take this training seriously, and
really take advantage of these 28 days to train yourselves for
the skills useful in life.
What you don’t understand, you need to ask the instructors.
The class is designed to be highly interactive. There is no time
for being shy in this class. Please ask for anything you are NOT
clear about. This is YOUR training!
Full 28 days training
There will be exercises to perform between classes. Some of
these exercises may become daily exercises for you long after
the training is over if you choose to do so. In these 28 days, you
will pay attention to everything you do on a daily basis - when
you walk to your car, to your home, in the shower, in your
office, when you enter a bar, restaurants, a dry cleaner, a
supermarket, etc. This training needs your commitment to take
charge of your own personal safety by training yourselves in self
defense. Train right, train hard, make it a priority for you in
these 28 days. Don’t waste your time, commitment counts!
Gaining proper balance is literally about knowing how to stand,
and how to walk & move around. It’s about aligning our body
parts in such a way that requires minimum energy on our part.
You will practice this daily as you run errands and do things in
your daily life. We will go over it in class.
The class meets once a week for 2 hours for 4 weeks. But as
you do your daily exercises, you may have some questions. We
are available by email or phone everyday of the 28-day period.
You don’t have to wait for the next class to ask questions. Our
commitment is to have each of you learn proper self defense
and practice it daily. We need your partnerships individually and
as a group, to make this training a success. We invite you to give
it all you got in these 28 days, and keep pushing yourself to get
out of your comfort zone.
When to eat?
Eat about 2 hours before class. Please avoid eating too short or
too long time before class. You need a lot of energy in class.
Bring a bottle of water or energy drink, and a hand towel.
At anytime, for any reason, you can decline from doing any of
the exercises we do in class. It is a safe and FUN training
ground, and it is YOUR training!
