Classes and Workshops



Not all self defense classes are created equal. Not only the techniques are different - the approach, the method used, and the way it is explained can be as different as night and day.

Self defense classes are NOT the same as martial arts classes, such as Karate or Jiu-Jitsu. Self defense is real life approach to defending yourself in violent situations. We are not a military training either, such as Krav Maga. Our self defense system was created for, and exclusively taught, for women and girls. Unlike what you see in other gym or fitness facilities, our punching bags are catered for women's self defense training. 


SHIELD Women's Self-Defense System is a 'system' of fighting specifically designed for a smaller person to fight a much bigger opponent in fully adrenalized situations. Our system is unique because we rely entirely on the lower body strength to generate power. Most self defense training rely on using upper body strength to generate power.

We train in realistic scenarios to be ready to fight in chaos. Our classes have been taught for LA County Dept of Public Health, USC, UCLA, Pepperdine, BuzzFeed, FOX Studio, Kaiser Permanente, Santa Monica Police Activities League, NBC, Lionsgate, and many companies, schools, government entities and private groups. 

Our self defense workshops are suitable for businesses, colleges, high schools, private groups and private lessons. The training can be at our studio or client's location. We conduct the training onsite at clients' office or residence or our studio in Santa Monica. The training can be a one time self defense workshop or weekly self defense training of up to 8 weeks. We can customize the training to suit your needs. 



CLASSES FOR INDIVIDUALS


We Offer 5 Types of Classes:
1. Intensive WEEKLY Training (2-hr classes, once/week - 5 weeks or 3 months)
2. ONE DAY Intensive Crash Course (10am to 4pm)
3. COLLEGE PREP Course for TEENS (10am to 12:30pm M-Th)
4. KICKBOXING Conditioning Training (1-hr classes, offered 4 days/week)
5. PRIVATE - Individual or Group Lessons 


Intensive WEEKLY Training (2-hr classes | once/week)
Class size: 8 to 12 students

Choose: 5 Week Training or 3 Months Training

The Intensive 2-hr Classes can be taken as a 5-Week or 3-Months Program. The 5-Week Program is the minimum you can take in the Intensive 2 Hr Classes. The 3 Month option (recommended) gives you more time to practice and become more proficient with the skills.

The 2-hr Intensive Classes are offered in small settings, maximum 12 students, average 10 students. This course uses realistic training scenarios to prepare students with effective self defense skills. You will learn how to get out from common assault for women, i.e. grab from behind, frontal and side attack, hair pull, chokehold, and various ground fighting skills. Assault with deadly weapon is also covered in this course.  You can miss and make up one class in the 5 week course. In the 3 months option, you can miss and make up four classes. Start date is the same for 5-Week or 3-Month program. 

Students completing this course will experience what it is like to be attacked from all sides, being jolted off the ground, and fight back with full force against a padded assailant. Students will learn how to use the core and lower body strength to generate power in striking back. This Course also covers safety tips for women, how to use one's voice as a weapon, discussions on actual case studies on sexual assault incidents, and studies on rape survivors in Southern California. 


ONE DAY Intensive Crash Course (10am to 5pm)
Class size: 5 to 10 students


This ONE DAY Intensive CRASH COURSE is loaded with everything you need to know that is covered in the 5-week Intensive Course in one single day. We go through the various assault scenarios throughout the day. By the end of the day, you will gain the knowledge and practice of fighting back with full force against a padded assailant. We go through ways to get out from common assault for women, i.e. grab from behind, hair pull, chokehold, and various pinned down on the ground positions. You will practice executing palm strikes, knee strikes, elbow strikes and kicks. This course is designed for small class size (5-10 students) to ensure each participant gets the full attention of the instructor. This course also includes pepper spray training. Students will spray a can of practice pepper spray in class. There is a one hour break for lunch. This training is suitable for those who do not have the time to commit more than one day to train. 



COLLEGE PREP Course for TEENAGERS (10am to 12:30pm Four Days Straight M-Th)
Class size: 5 to 10 students


This COLLEGE PREP COURSE FOR TEENS is geared for teenagers ages 14 to 18 years old. The course covers everything you need to know that is covered in the 5-week Intensive Course in four straight days. The course will focus on issues teenagers will face in college/high school. Class discussion includes dating violence, recognizing signs of abusive partner, sexual assault studies in Southern California, situational awareness, and boundary setting. 

We go through ways to get out from common assault for women, i.e. grab from behind, hair pull, chokehold, and various pinned down on the ground positions. You will practice executing palm strikes, knee strikes, elbow strikes and kicks. This course is designed for small class size (5-10 students) to ensure each participant gets the full attention of the instructor.
 


KICKBOXING Conditioning Training (1-hr classes | multiple days/week)

This KICKBOXING Conditioning Training builds up your stamina and increases your core strength. No experience necessary. Unlike other kickboxing classes, you will be training in skills that are useful in real life self defense situations. This class combines cardio and core strengthening workouts. The drills we do in class will help improve your balance, and increase precisions in executing kicks, punches, elbow and knee strikes. Students will throw hundreds of kicks and strikes on a target in each class. This program is designed to make you fit, toned and become proficient in correctly executing various strikes.

Your Location: We visit your location with all the gear, mats and equipments. The training can be conducted in a home (backyard, garage, cleared off living room), office or community room.There is 
additional fee of $100 to conduct the training at your location.
